Day 1: Meet guides, Pam and Matt Rauhala, in Wellington, Utah. Travel with us to Nine Mile Canyon. You will see more than forty miles of ancient rock art and dwellings of the Archaic, Ute and Fremont cultures. Discover the western history of cattle empires, stagecoach stops, telegraph stations and homesteaders. Take in all this, along with great scenery and abundant wildlife. On our tour, we will take you into some lesser known rock art sites, like the pregnant buffalo panel.
Rock art that you will see includes the hunter panel, owl panel, balloon man, family panel, Rasmussen's Cave (a dwelling with pictographs and petroglyphs from many time periods all over the walls) and dugouts on Warner Ridge.
Lunch is provided, "we bring with us the best restaurant in the canyon," laughed Matt Rauhala.
Physical activity levels are tailored to your desires can range from little or no hiking to extensive hiking side-trips.
You won't regret seeing the canyon with the Rauhalas, "If you visit the canyon with us you will see a number of pictographs and petroglyphs that are very difficult to find on your own. Often when we take a group out, other tourists who came alone stop and ask, "What are you looking at, we just drove by and didn't see a thing!" added Matt.
That evening travel to the Spring Canyon Retreat where you'll spend the night
Day 2: Relax in the cool mountain air or participate in optional activities at Spring Canyon Retreat in Whitmore Canyon, part of the Bookcliff Mountains. The log cabin has a family room/kitchen, one private bedroom, a loft that can sleep 6-8, one modern bathroom with shower, and an outhouse! (using it is purely optional) Enjoy the freedom of packing and cooking your own food. For an extra fee the Rauhalas will cater for you.
The Rauhalas love the mountain getaway; "Spring Canyon Retreat is so beautiful it's like a dream. Once you're here you won't want to leave!" commented Matt. It is near Grassy Trail Reservoir.
