Crystal Geyser
Type: Out and back
Rating: Intermediate
Length: 20 miles
Notes: May be hot in summer
THE RIDE: Crystal Geyser may not be the most faithful of erupting geysers,
but it makes for a fine intermediate cycling destination. The geyser shoots water 50 feet into the air twice daily. These eruptions can last up to 10 minutes. The geyser is situated on the shores of the Green River, and is constantly bubbling, sending cold water into tub size pools that provide a refreshing dip on hot days.
Directions: Start pedaling from the town park in the middle of the town of Green River and head east on Main Street across the town's namesake. About 1.5 miles from town, near the entrance to 1-70, the road curves south and forks.
Take the left fork onto the paved frontage road and pass underneath the railroad tracks. Take an immediate right turn and pass under the interstate. After about a half a mile the road becomes rougher. It then becomes a good 2WD road, descending for the next three miles to a sandstone canyon. Pass under the power lines and go right at the upcoming fork. Follow the lines to the riverbank, where the geyser is located. Hopefully you will arrive at the right time for the eruption. Return on the same route.
