Flat Top / Sinbad Country

Type: Loop
Rating: Intermediate
Length: 11.5 miles

THE RIDE: When conditions are right, and they usually are, the view from the top of Flat Top is sensational. The 360 degree panorama extends to the LaSal Mountains near Moab in the east to the Wasatch Plateau in the west. To the south lies Boulder Mountain, Capitol Reef and the Henry Mountains. To the north is the vast topography of Sinbad Country and the San Rafael Swell. Bring a camera, as it is a worthwhile vista to have cap- tured on film.

The tour of this area follows graded dirt roads and is an excellent intermediate trip. The climb to the summit of Flat Top may require some dismounting, but it is relatively short, and as mentioned, the view alone is justification. This route may also be ridden as a shorter out and back, or as a loop that totals 11.5 miles.

Directions: From Green River, travel west on 1-70 for 12 miles to the junction with UT 24 (Hanksville, Exit 147) and head south. After about 30 miles, take a right at the junction for Temple Mountain and Goblin Valley. The Goblin Valley turnoff is 5 miles ahead and is marked by a message board and a sign for Goblin Valley, the routes starting point. Park and pedal along the road toward the reef (west). The road soon changes from pavement to dirt as it enters Temple Wash. There is a pictograph panel above the large alcove on your right. At the upcoming junction with the Behind the Reef Road, (ride #17), you have the choice of two options. Heading straight here follows the Temple Wash to Tan Seep road. The road climbs through the strata as it approaches Flat Top, an unmistakable landmark. After about 6 miles, the road reaches the base of the mountain. There is an old doubletrack that veers left, then traverses across the face of Flat Top. Climb up the road to the plateau. then head south for about 1/2 mile to the overlook. Retrace your route back to the trailhead.

Back at the junction, those pursuing a loop should take a left on the Behind The Reef road. At almost 3 miles from the trailhead, cross the wash, and continue uphill for another mile and a half to where the road tops out, and bends. There is an old jeep trail here veering right, take it. The road here heads northwest towards Flat Top. The road is rough in spots, but is easy to follow as it approaches the mountain. After rejoining the Temple Wash Road at 6 miles, climb the face of Flat Top, then south to the overlook. Enjoy the view from here, and perhaps lunch as it is worthy of an extended stop. To close the loop, glide down the Temple Mountain Road back to the trailhead.
