Lower Price River Rd / Woodside
Type: Out & Back
Rating: Novice - Advanced
Length: Varies - 16 miles +
Notes: Remote area. Be self-sufficient
THE RIDE: The Book Cliffs are one of wildest areas of the state and receive very little visitation. It is remote, and offers very few access routes into its interior. As the Price River follows its route to its meeting with the Green River, it passes through this spectacular area highlighted by petroglyph panels, dramatic canyons and sheer cliffs, as well as the river itself . There are also numerous species of birds inhabiting the marshes along the river.
Directions: This ride is suitable for all levels of riders, as there are different options to explore. Begin at the town of Woodside which is 26 miles north of Green River, or about 36 miles south of Price along US 6. It is distinguished by a small gas station along the highway. Ask for permission to park here.
The smooth dirt road begins across the highway and heads east into the cliffs ahead. Enjoy the easy pedaling as it rises and falls for the next several miles. After about 6 miles the road rises above the river offering a fine view of the canyon below. About 2 miles further there is a petroglyph panel on the left (north) side of the road. This is a good turn-around point for intermediate riders. Advanced riders may want to continue on along the road as it deteriorates, crosses the Price River and forks. One trail heads south and eventually up onto the Beckwith Plateau. The other continues east to the Green River deep within the Book Cliffs. It is advised that you carry maps into any of these remote areas, and be prepared for any situation that may arise, as help can be several hours away.
