Mounds / Price River Overlook
Type: Out and back
Rating: Intermediate
Length: Varies - up to 26 miles
Notes: No water along route.
THE RIDE: This is an excellent beginner-intermediate ride that traverses the high desert to the southeast of Price. Observant riders will see Pronghorn antelope, deer, as well as birds of prey. The route follows a well maintained 2wd dirt road most of the way, and ends at an overlook several hundred feet above the Price River. The ride may be shortened for beginners by driving further out along Mounds Road.
Directions: The ride starts off of Highway 6 approximately 3.5 miles east from the Nine Mile Canyon turnoff at the edge of Wellington. Park at your discretion. From the turnoff follow the well maintained dirt road south along the Mounds bench. The road rises and falls for several miles allowing you to enjoy spectacular views of the Wasatch Plateau to the West, Flattop Mountain to the south, and of the Book Cliffs to the east.
After 5 miles cross over a cattle guard where the road twists and turns down off the plateau, passes an old corral and arrives at the railroad tracks. Cross the tracks and go left (east) following the railroad tracks. After about .6 of a mile, take the fork to the right. The road will steepen, cross some rocky sections and enter a section of juniper trees. After 2.5 miles, a double track forks off to the right (south). Follow this road for a mile to where it ends at the drop-off overlooking the Price River.
