Sego Canyon

THE RIDE: The Book Cliffs and the Roan Plateau are one of the most inaccessible areas in the lower 48 states. These canyons and mesas used to be the home of the Fremont Indians and are now inhabited by the Ute Indian Tribe. This intermediate level ride features such highlights as ancient Indian rock art, the abandoned coal town of Sego as well as views of the Henry, Abajo. and LaSaI mountain ranges.
Directions: Sego Canyon is 25 miles east of Green River along 1-70, take the Thompson Exit #185. Head north for 3 miles throuQh town and along a good dirt road signed for Sego Canyon. At the mouth of the canyon is a parking area, where this ride begins. Also here are four Indian petroglyph panels along the canyon walls.
Pedal north for 0.5 mile, then turn right next to the old building and pass through a narrow road cut heading east. The road here is evident and continues uphill through the canyon. It is an easy pedal that novices can enjoy to the ghost town of Sego, an old mining town once supporting a population of 500.
More advanced riders can continue up canyon and climb onto the plateau above. After 11 miles the road ends at a locked gate that marks the Ute Indian Reservation boundary. Please do not trespass. Retrace the route back to your vehicle and enjoy the downhill cruise all the way.
