Historic Cemeteries
There are many historic cemeteries in Castle Country. They are a lasting reminder of the local pioneer, coal mining and railroad history. Many cemeteries give evidence of the many immigrants drawn to the area by the coal mines.
Emery County Cemeteries
Many pioneers are buried in the 16 historic cemeteries in Emery County. From the cities to remote areas, each cemetery tells of the first settler's struggles. The Lawrence Cemetery dates back to 1870. The Orangeville cemetery's first burial was in 1881, the first year the town was settled.
Carbon County Cemeteries
There are 16 historic cemeteries in Carbon County. Every cemetery has an interesting history. A few cemeteries of interest are:
- The Price City Cemetery contains a section with headstones in Japanese and hundreds of Greek, Slovenian, Italian and other immigrants are buried there. A few local outlaws are also buried there.
- Scofield Cemetery contains most of the fallen miners from the Winter Quarters coal mine disaster.
- In the Castle Gate Cemetery there are many graves from the 1924 Castle Gate Mine Explosion.
