Fishing Castle Country
Whether you enjoy fly-fishing, angling or ice fishing, the waters in Eastern Utah are prime habitat for rainbow, cutthroat and brown trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish and crayfish.
Cast your line in one of Castle Country's streams, reservoirs or lakes. The State of Utah has designated many of our waters as Blue Ribbon Fisheries.
Large Reservoirs & State Parks
Electric Lake & its tributaries
Location: At the top of Huntington Canyon on State Road 31. See map
Types of fish: Yellowstone cutthroat trout
When to fish: Fishing is good year-round. A snow machine or snowshoes are helpful for accessing the lake in wintertime. However, fishing in the summer offers an escape from the high temperatures in the valleys below.
Huntington North Reservoir
Location: in Emery County, just two miles north of Huntington and 20 miles south of Price. Follow State Highway 10 to the well-signed turnoff for Huntington State Park.
Types of fish: Largemouth bass, bluegill and crawdad fishing is popular, especially with the children. Trout may also be caught, especially in spring and fall.
When to fish: Bass, bluegill and catfish are often located around structures, such as docks, submerged trees and emergent aquatic plants. These species are most readily caught in summer months. Trout are more likely to be caught in open water or around the rocky dam, especially in spring and fall.
Facilities: Boat ramp, boat docks, beaches, campground, picnic sites, group pavilion, drinking water, modern restrooms, hot showers and sanitary dump station. There is a fee to enter the park.
Joe's Valley Reservoir
Location: From Orangeville, drive State Road 29 about 10 miles. From Ephraim, drive east on the Ephraim Canyon Road over the top of the Wasatch Plateau (graded, dirt road) and partway down the other side
Types of fish: splake (brook trout/ lake trout hybrid)
When to fish: The best splake fishing occurs in the late fall, just before the closure to protect spawning fish. Splake can also be readily caught in early spring, as ice comes off the reservoir. Ice fishing in early winter can be good. During the summer months, trolling or still fishing from a boat is necessary to catch the splake, which occupy the cold, deep water.
Facilities: Boat ramp, campgrounds, restrooms
Millsite Reservoir
Location: Off State Highway 10, near Ferron, at the mouth of Ferron Canyon, four miles west of Ferron in Millsite State Park. see a map
Types of fish: Rainbow, cutthroat trout, and splake
When to fish: Trout fishing is often best in early spring and late fall.
Facilities: Boat ramp, docks, a sandy beach picnic and camping sites, group pavilions, drinking water, modern restrooms with hot showers and a sanitary disposal station. There is a fee to enter the park.
Scofield Reservoir
This is a Blue ribbon fishery
Location: From U.S. Highway 6 (near Soldier Summit) turn west on to State Road 96. Drive nine miles to Scofield Reservoir in Scofield State Park. See a map
Types of fish: Rainbow and cutthroat trout
When to fish: Best fishing occurs immediately after ice-off in the early spring or in the late fall and just after the reservoir freezes. This reservoir is popular for shore, boat, float tube, kick boat and ice anglers. It freezes earlier and thaws earlier than most other large lakes, offering good early season ice fishing and shore fishing opportunities.
