Hiking in Castle Country

There are many places to hike in Castle Country. There are hundreds of scenic hikes. It could take a lifetime to hike our spectacular deserts, mountains and valleys. But, if you only have a weekend, check out one of these favorite spots.

San Rafael Swell

The San Rafael Swell offers numerous hiking opportunities. You’re only limited by your imagination because traveling by foot is allowed everywhere in the Swell. Some trails are shared by ATVs--most allow horseback riders and bicycles. You can avoid motorized vehicles by hiking in Wilderness Study Areas. Trails can range from a short morning hike, to multiple-day journeys. See our San Rafael Swell hiking page.

Hiking in the Manti-La Sal National Forest

Hundreds of miles of trails are found in the Manti-La Sal National Forest from open grassy slopes to deep spruce and fir groves. There are so many places to hike- but we’ve chosen three to highlight.

  • The Left Fork of Huntington Canyon Trail: (A National Recreation Trail) This 6-mile trail is open to foot and horse travel only and provides access to some quality fly-fishing opportunities. You will see gorgeous green mountaintops and streams.

  • The Fish Creek Trail: (A National Recreation Trail) 10-mile trail is open to foot, horse, and bicycle travel.

  • Castle Valley Ridge Trail System: Offers hikers, bikers and horseback riders access to some of the most breathtaking scenery on the Wasatch Plateau. These high-elevation mountain trails provide magnificent views of surrounding valleys, the San Rafael Swell and the Bookcliffs. This system includes five distinct trails that can be traveled individually or combined to form a trail loop.
