Equestrian Adventures

Horseback riding in Castle Country is the ultimate adventure. By horseback riding, you can access many areas that are so scenic, you won't believe your eyes. For the complete experience, many outfitters offer western experience adventures that include horseback riding, meals, and lodging.

Here is a very small sampling of equestrian opportunities. In many of these regions motorized vehicles are not allowed.

The San Rafael Swell

The San Rafael Swell offers hundreds of miles of horseback riding opportunities. You're only limited by your imagination because horses are allowed everywhere in the Swell. Some trails are shared by ATVs--most allow hikers and bicycles. By riding in Wilderness Study Areas, motorized vehicles can be avoided. Trails can range from morning rides, to multiple-day journeys.

Touring the Swell on horseback with a guide is a fabulous experience. The outfitter does all the work and you get to enjoy the scenery!

We have chosen a few favorite trails to highlight. The Price BLM office is happy to assist you as you plan your trip. Contact them (435) 633-3600 or visit their web page.

  • Ride near Sid's mountain in the northern part of the San Rafael Swell and travel through the Little Grand Canyon (the Wedge) from the bottom along the San Rafael River- You'll be amazed as you ride the bottom of this dizzying gorge.
  • The Behind the Reef Trail offers expansive views in the San Rafael Reef Wilderness Study Area.
  • Coal Wash to Fixit Pass is another very scenic ride.

The Manti La Sal National Forest

Hundreds of miles of trails are found in the Manti-La Sal National Forest from open grassy slopes to deep spruce and fir groves. There are so many places to ride- but we've chosen three to highlight.

  • The Left Fork of Huntington Canyon Trail: (a National Recreation Trail) This 6-mile trail is open to foot and horse travel only and provides access to some quality fly-fishing opportunities. You will see gorgeous green mountaintops and streams.
  • The Fish Creek Trail: (a National Recreation Trail) 10-mile trail is open to foot, horse, and bicycle travel.
  • Castle Valley Ridge Trail System: Offers hikers, bikers and horseback riders access to some of the most breathtaking scenery on the Wasatch Plateau. These high-elevation mountain trails provide magnificent views of surrounding valleys, the San Rafael Swell and the Bookcliffs. This system includes five distinct trails that can be traveled individually or combined to form a trail loop.
