About Utah's Carbon County

Carbon is located in southeastern Utah. The beauty of the rugged west, recreation adventures and geologic wonders all grace this land.

The area was settled in the 1800s by Mormon pioneers. The history changed dramatically when coal mines opened throughout the area in the late 1870s. Immigrants from all over the world poured into Carbon and Emery Counties. The result has been an area much different from the rest of Utah. Today, Carbon is one of the most ethnically and religiously diverse locations in the state.

The scenery in Carbon is as diverse as its people. Lush mountain forests contrast the red rock formations. Lakes and rivers flow above desert plateaus.

The area is becoming famous for its ancient history. The discoveries of dinosaurs and Ancient American rock art have been featured in the national media.

There are many "wilderness" area here that is perfect for outdoor adventure. Hiking, biking, horseback riding, river rafting and ATV riding are a few favorites.
