Learn How to Hunt Wild Turkeys
Free seminar on March 19
Price -- If you want to hunt wild turkeys, but you’re not sure where to start, a free seminar on March 19 will show you the way.
The Division of Wildlife Resources will offer the seminar at its office in Price, 319 N. Carbonville Road. The seminar runs from 7 – 9 p.m.
“The seminar is absolutely free,” says Brent Stettler, regional outreach manager for the DWR. “No pre-registration is required. We hope you’ll join us that night.”
At the seminar, you’ll hear presentations by experienced turkey hunters, who will share their knowledge about turkeys and how to hunt them successfully in Utah. “The presenters will cover all the basics you need to get started,” Stettler says.
Topics will include:
- Where to find Merriam's and Rio Grande turkeys in Utah,
- How to tell a mature gobbler from a juvenile male or a hen,
- Turkey habitat and food preferences,
- Daily and seasonal behavior patterns,
- The best hunting equipment and accessories, and
- How to call in a turkey, or stalk one that won't come to your call.
Stettler says the spring turkey hunt in Utah happens in April and May. Permits for the hunt in April are available only through a drawing. “But the statewide hunt in May is different,” he says. “You can get a permit over-the-counter at any license agent or at a DWR office. You can also buy one online at www.wildlife.utah.gov.”
Permits for the hunt in May are on sale now. For more information, call the DWR office in Price at 435-613-3700.
